In recent years there has been an increasing demand for rumen protected fats that have been produced without palm oil for a number of reasons. In this bulletin, several options are described.
This bulletin describes the different production techniques used to turn raw materials such as palm oil, linseed oil, olive oil or rapeseed oil into a dry, rumen resistant fat that is suitable as a component in animal nutrition. The influence of each production technique on the fatty acid pattern of the raw material is also described.
In this Bulletin the different functions and advantages of fatty acids in animal feed are explained. The most common fatty acids in animal feed (C16:0, C18:0, C18:1, C18:2 and C18:3) are discussed and their specific roles in the stimulation of productivity and fertility are explained.
